Keeping Health Simple

I read something today, and it sort of connected with something else that I have been pondering for a while. Let me try and explain in the best way I can.

What I read was this: Exercising once per week is better than zero times per week. People are stuck in a mindset that if they can’t exercise 3 times per week then they may as well not exercise at all.

And that really hit me. It is SO true. How we arrived at this place I am not sure, but I can definitely say I have unconsciously had this mindset myself. Is it being weighed down by everything on our plates: work, parenting, studying, general overwhelm and ‘hustle culture’? We expect so much of ourselves in so many aspects of our lives that somewhere along the way, somehow, we have developed an automatic response of all or nothing.

Which leads me to the other thing I have been pondering. If you’re judging purely by what you see on social media, you can only be healthy if you are carefully curating Buddha bowls and acai bowls for every meal (and you have to eat them in the latest active wear right!). And honestly, this can feel SO unattainable for so many people for so many reasons. The thought of spending so much time crafting these insta-worthy healthy meals can be outright overwhelming - and so, people tend to do the same thing… and that is, nothing at all - become too frightened to make healthful dietary changes because it just seems too hard.

The real talk is this: start somewhere, and start small. Don’t be weighed down by what social media influencers are telling you you should and should not be doing and eating. Seek qualified and personalised advice that works for you, in your life, in your circumstances, that is sustainable and attainable (*cough cough* a Naturopath like me!). And know that the 1.5L of water you drank today, is better than the none you drank yesterday. The 1 piece of fruit you make the effort to eat tomorrow is better than the last 3 weeks without a piece of fruit. Do you see? We must stop berating ourselves and holding ourselves to standards set by people who are probably (maybe, this a pure assumption) eating a burger after they finish their acai bowl.
